Hallon's chatbot said phone support didn't exist — a Swedish court fined the answer
Asked how to get help, Hallon's AI chatbot said phone support didn't exist — the number sat in its own terms. The Market Court: misleading, SEK 500,000 vite.

What happened
Hallon, the budget mobile operator owned by Tre, routes customers to an AI chatbot for help. Asked about contact options, the bot told customers that Hallon 'does not offer customer service via telephone'. That was wrong — a phone number was listed in the company's own general terms and conditions.
The Consumer Ombudsman took the case to court, and on 1 April 2026 the Patent and Market Court (PMT 13029-25) found the chatbot's statement misleading. The harm was not just a wrong answer: told that phone support did not exist, consumers might refrain from exercising their rights — cancelling a subscription, for instance, or disputing an invoice.
The court prohibited Hallon from using the statement or similar wording, backed by a conditional fine of SEK 500,000. It dismissed the Ombudsman's further demand — an order to display the phone number on the website — ruling that was not essential information. The shape of the judgment is the point: the operator answers for what its chatbot tells customers.
Why it happened
- A bot's answer is the company's answer: the misinformation went out in Hallon's own service channel, and the operator owned it.
- The harm was deterred rights: customers who believe phone support doesn't exist may skip cancelling or disputing — that made the statement misleading.
- The court drew a precise line: the wrong answer was banned with a SEK 500,000 bite, but displaying the number was not ordered — only what misleads gets remedied.
The lesson
A chatbot speaks for the company: tell customers your phone support doesn't exist and the court treats the bot's words as misleading marketing — with a fine attached.
Aftermath
The judgment PMT 13029-25 of 1 April 2026 attached a SEK 500,000 conditional fine to the prohibition. The Consumer Ombudsman's parallel claim to force the phone number onto Hallon's contact pages was dismissed as not essential information.
