GQ China's licence expired — Condé Nast's ¥400M engine went dark

The China News Service partnership behind 智族GQ expired in July 2024; the title sat dark 18 months before relaunching as 精英GQ.

What happened

GQ China — 智族GQ, launched in 2009 as a licence partnership between Condé Nast and China News Service — stopped publishing in July 2024 when the agreement expired without a successor. The June issue was the last, and every account the title ran went silent. At its peak the magazine made more than ¥400M a year and was the profit engine of Condé Nast's China business.

The silence lasted eighteen months. The licensing structure that had held the partnership together could not simply be renewed, so a return required a new model: a brand collaboration in which a qualified domestic publisher handles publication while Condé Nast supplies the name and content. That deal came together with Nanfang Media Group, and the magazine returned as 精英GQ in January 2026.

In between, Condé Nast China ran on a single title — Vogue — while GQ's team dispersed and its new-media accounts were renamed and detached from the brand. The magazine that came back in 2026 inherits an audience that spent a year and a half somewhere else.

Why it happened

  • The title rested on a licensing agreement with a fixed expiry date, and no successor arrangement was in place when it lapsed — so publication stopped outright.
  • Eighteen months of silence dispersed the team, detached the accounts and handed readers to other titles; the 2026 relaunch rebuilt the operation from scratch.
  • Condé Nast's China business stood on two legs; losing the bigger one left Vogue alone carrying the group.

The lesson

A licensed edition is only as durable as its agreement — when the local partnership lapses with no successor, even the market's biggest title can go dark overnight.

Aftermath

GQ returned on January 16, 2026 as 精英GQ under a brand collaboration with Nanfang Media Group, with Jackson Wang and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on the first covers. The original 智族 publication licence was renamed out of fashion publishing in June 2025.
