What happened
The Morandi Bridge (Ponte Morandi) was a cable-stayed bridge in Genoa, Italy, designed by engineer Riccardo Morandi and completed in 1967. It was a key artery on the A10 motorway connecting Genoa to the French border. The bridge was known for its unusual design — concrete stays that were innovative but difficult to inspect and maintain.
On August 14, 2018, during a heavy rainstorm, a 210-meter section of the bridge collapsed over the Polcevera river, killing 43 people. The collapse was sudden and catastrophic. Video showed the bridge falling as vehicles drove onto the span. The toll could have been higher if not for the holiday period reducing traffic.
The investigation found that the collapse was caused by decades of structural degradation, particularly of the concrete stays, which had been weakened by corrosion and environmental exposure. Maintenance reports as early as the 1990s had flagged concerns about the bridge's condition. The operator, Autostrade per l'Italia, was found to have conducted inadequate inspections and deferred necessary repairs.
