What happened
Frigidaire's little retro minifridge was a Target exclusive from January 2020 to October 2023, about $30 a cube, manufactured in China by ShangYu North Electron and imported by Canada's Curtis International under the Frigidaire name.
The internal electrical components can short circuit and ignite the plastic housing. CPSC recalled 634,000 units in July 2024 after fires and more than $700,000 in property damage; in January 2026 it added 330,000 more — model EFMIS121, with six reports of catching fire — bringing the recall to 964,000.
The remedy tells the story: stop using it, register, unplug it, cut the power cord, write 'Recall' on the door, and throw the fridge away. A $30 appliance's end-of-life instruction arrived as its safety fix.
