What happened
In April 2021 Nike suspended its endorsement deal with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, saying it was 'deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations', and Beats by Dre ended its sponsorship. The allegations were a wave of civil lawsuits: more than twenty women accused him of misconduct during massage sessions, most of which were later settled.
Eleven months later the Cleveland Browns did the opposite of every advertiser in the market: they traded for Watson and signed him to a five-year, $230 million contract, fully guaranteed — the most guaranteed money ever given to an NFL player at the time, with league discipline still pending. On 18 August 2022 the NFL suspended him for eleven games and fined him $5 million, after an independent disciplinary officer had first ruled six games for violations of the personal-conduct policy.
Why it happened
- Nike's suspension showed the market price of the allegations in one sentence; the Browns' $230 million guarantee showed what a team desperate for a quarterback will pay to ignore it.
- The bet was uniquely exposed: the most guaranteed money in league history sat on a player whose discipline was unresolved, and the 11-game suspension arrived five months after signing.
- Beats and Nike both walked in April 2021, so the Browns could not claim the risk was unknowable — every sponsor had already priced it.
The lesson
When every sponsor walks, the price of the risk is public: the Browns paid the most guaranteed money in league history for a player the market had already suspended in its own accounts.
Aftermath
Watson served the eleven-game suspension and was reinstated on 28 November 2022, playing his first game for the Browns the following week. Most of the civil lawsuits were settled out of court.
