A sports film pulled itself from Spring Festival release and still lost most of its budget
Ping Pong: The Triumph opened in China's most crowded box office window, was yanked after one day, and its ~350M yuan cost dwarfed its 100M yuan total gross.

What happened
Deng Chao co-directed and starred in Ping Pong: The Triumph, a sports drama about China's national table tennis team, releasing it into the 2023 Lunar New Year window — the single most competitive and highest-grossing release slot on the Chinese film calendar — against several other major titles.
The film opened to a weak roughly 30 million yuan on its first day, and the following day its distributor abruptly announced the film would withdraw from the crowded holiday slate for a smaller-scale re-release, promising a 'comeback' three weeks later on February 17.
The re-release did not reverse the outcome: total box office crossed only about 100 million yuan after 33 days, against a widely reported production budget of roughly 350 million yuan — a loss on a scale industry estimates called a near-total write-off of the investment.
Why it happened
- The studio released a mid-tier sports drama directly into the most saturated, competitive release window on the calendar without a strong enough opening-day draw to survive it.
- Withdrawing after just one day signaled the distributor had no confidence the film could compete, but the decision came only after the holiday slate's prime days were already lost.
- The promised 'comeback' re-release didn't change the film's fundamental audience appeal problem, just its release timing.
- Nobody scaled the budget to a level the film's realistic box office ceiling — outside the top-tier Spring Festival contenders — could plausibly reach.
The lesson
Pulling a film from release after one day doesn't undo a bad opening-weekend bet — it just adds the cost of a second, smaller release on top of it.
Aftermath
Ping Pong: The Triumph became a frequently cited case in Chinese film industry coverage of the growing trend of mid-tier films withdrawing from crowded holiday release windows, a pattern that expanded sharply in the years that followed.
