Charlotte Tilbury ended its Korean distribution — offline stores and online shop closed
Charlotte Tilbury's Korean distributor contract ended, shutting all general retail channels by January 2026 and leaving only duty-free counters.

What happened
Charlotte Tilbury, the British prestige cosmetics brand founded by celebrity makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, began withdrawing from the Korean general retail market in late 2025. The brand's distribution contract with Lotte GFR—the retail distribution arm of Lotte Department Store—expired, leading to the closure of all general retail channels across the country.
Official online sales ended on December 28, 2025. The brand also closed its dedicated stores at Lotte Department Store's main branch, Jamsil branch, and Incheon branch. Other channels including home shopping and Chicor were also shut down. From January 2026 onward, Charlotte Tilbury products remained available exclusively through duty-free channels: Lotte Duty Free (Myeongdong Main Store), Shilla Duty Free (Seoul Store), and online duty-free platforms.
The contraction was significant because Charlotte Tilbury had invested heavily in its Korean presence, including dedicated store-in-store counters at major department stores and a robust online store. The brand had benefited from the K-beauty boom's halo effect on international prestige beauty brands, but the expiration of the Lotte GFR distribution contract forced a dramatic downsizing of its Korean footprint. The brand's withdrawal from general retail left Korean customers with limited access to its full product range, available only to travellers passing through duty-free channels.
Why it happened
- The expiration of the Lotte GFR distribution contract left Charlotte Tilbury without a distributor for general retail channels in Korea.
- The brand had not established independent retail operations or direct-to-consumer channels that could function without the Lotte GFR partnership.
- Korea's fiercely competitive prestige beauty market — international and local brands crowded limited shelf space — made renewals harder for mid-sized foreign brands without independent retail.
The lesson
A distributor-dependent market entry is only as durable as the contract — when the partner does not renew, the brand vanishes from every channel at once, regardless of consumer demand.
Aftermath
Charlotte Tilbury products remained available in Korea only through duty-free channels at Lotte Duty Free Myeongdong, Shilla Duty Free Seoul, and the brands' online duty-free platforms. Customers who had purchased products through general retail channels could no longer find the brand in Korean stores or its Korean online shop. The withdrawal was part of a broader pattern in 2025–2026 of international prestige beauty brands losing or exiting their Korean distribution arrangements as market conditions shifted.
