Cha Eun-woo's 20 billion won tax bill emptied his brand roster: Abib, Shinhan pulled ads

What happened
Cha Eun-woo was one of K-pop's most bankable faces of the mid-2020s — an ASTRO member whose solo career carried him into dramas and a string of high-profile endorsements. In January 2026, Korea's National Tax Service alleged he had set up a corporation under a family member's name to avoid income tax, assessing 20 billion won (US$13.6 million) — reportedly one of the largest tax assessments ever levied on a Korean celebrity.
The brands moved within days. Skincare brand Abib, which had named him ambassador, switched its promotional videos with Cha to private on YouTube and Instagram on January 22, 2026, and deleted its posts announcing him on X. Shinhan Bank, which had used him in ads since early 2025, made its Cha advertisements private on its YouTube and social channels on January 23.
His agency Fantagio said the matter 'has not yet been finally determined or notified' and that it planned to 'actively explain our position through lawful procedures.' On April 8, 2026, Cha paid the full 20 billion won assessment and apologised on Instagram, saying he bore 'sole responsibility, not my family nor the company.'
Why it happened
- A tax assessment is an official document, and brands treated it as final: Abib and Shinhan acted on the NTS's allegation before Fantagio's statement landed.
- The same week every channel moved at once: Abib hid YouTube and Instagram promos and deleted X posts; Shinhan followed the next morning — no brand wanted to be last showing his face.
- The 20 billion won figure — reportedly one of the largest assessments ever for a Korean celebrity — priced the risk in headlines before any appeal was decided.
- Paying the full amount in April did not restore the January campaigns; the removal decisions were made when the news broke, not when the case closed.
The lesson
Brands acted on an official allegation in days and never came back after the case settled — an NTS assessment of 20 billion won ended Cha Eun-woo's endorsement run faster than any verdict could have.
Aftermath
Abib switched Cha Eun-woo's promotional videos to private on YouTube and Instagram on January 22, 2026, and deleted posts announcing his ambassadorship on X; Shinhan Bank made its ads featuring him private on January 23. Fantagio said the matter had not been finally determined and that it would explain its position through lawful procedures. On April 8, 2026, Cha paid the full 20 billion won (US$13.6 million) assessment and apologised on Instagram, claiming sole responsibility.
