Boris Bidjan Saberi closed after 20 years — manufacturing got too hard for the avant-garde

German avant-garde menswear label Boris Bidjan Saberi closed in July 2025 after 20 years, citing production difficulties.

What happened

Boris Bidjan Saberi launched in 2006 as an avant-garde menswear label based in Barcelona, known for its dark, architectural aesthetic and experimental use of materials. The brand developed a cult following among streetwear and high-fashion collectors, collaborated with Salomon and Reebok, and presented regularly at Paris Fashion Week. Over 20 years it built one of the most distinctive identities in German contemporary fashion.

On May 23, 2025, Hypebeast reported that the brand would cease operations by the end of July. Founder Boris Bidjan Saberi sent a letter to retail partners explaining that production difficulties had made it impossible to maintain the brand's quality standards without relocating manufacturing. 'Under current conditions and without relocating production, it is impossible for us to maintain operations with the standards of quality, integrity, and consistency that have always been the foundation of our project,' he wrote.

The closure affected the entire operational structure including the Barcelona atelier and showroom. Remaining stock was made available through the Barcelona store, online orders, and direct sales. Saberi promised his creative vision would continue in some form, and the closure was framed as a transformation rather than an ending, but the 20-year-old brand's physical operations were shut down for good.

Why it happened

  • Independent avant-garde fashion brands operate on thin margins and cannot absorb the rising costs of specialized European manufacturing without raising prices beyond their niche market.
  • Saberi refused to compromise on quality or relocate production, leaving no viable path between his standards and the economic reality of small-scale luxury manufacturing.
  • After 20 years, the brand had not grown large enough to benefit from economies of scale — a classic trap for cult labels with loyal but limited audiences.

The lesson

A cult following and 20 years cannot sustain a brand when specialized manufacturing costs exceed what buyers will pay — small-batch luxury economics force a choice between compromising or closing.

Aftermath

Boris Bidjan Saberi closed its production company and entire operational structure by the end of July 2025. Remaining inventory was liquidated through the Barcelona store and online. The founder stated the closure was a transformation, not an ending, suggesting future projects under a different model, but the label as it had existed for two decades was terminated.
