Blokker, the Dutch household chain, goes bankrupt after losing the online race

Dutch household chain Blokker, founded in 1896, is declared bankrupt in Nov 2024 under €90M+ debt after lagging online for years

Blokker · 2024-11-13

What happened

Blokker is a Dutch retail chain founded in 1896, for over a century a household name selling everything from pans and toys to electronics and home goods. Once it effectively owned the high street for everyday household articles, its market position was gradually eroded as the category shifted online.

By 2024 the chain was owned by Mirage Retail Group (which had taken control in 2019). Years of declining results and a lagging online operation left the business unable to service a debt load that had grown to more than €90 million, including €26.7 million still owed on a €35 million loan from Gordon Brothers and €26.1 million in tax arrears.

The company was granted a suspension of payments in the first days of November 2024 and declared bankrupt on 13 November 2024, with more than 3,500 employees and close to 400 stores. The curator linked the mounting tax debt to the coronavirus crisis. The stores closed in two waves in December 2024, and the brand was sold later that month to Roland Palmer, a great-grandson of the founder, who relaunched it as a smaller chain.

Why it happened

  • The chain reacted slowly to the shift of everyday household shopping online and lost ground to e-commerce
  • Years of declining results piled up a debt load of more than €90 million that the business could no longer service
  • The coronavirus crisis inflated the tax arrears the curator named as a proximate cause of the insolvency

The lesson

A category that moves online faster than the retailer decides is a fuse, not a trend. When the debt is already built and the response is late, the closure is a matter of timing, not of whether.

Aftermath

Blokker was declared bankrupt on 13 November 2024 with more than 3,500 employees and close to 400 stores. The stores shut in two waves in December 2024, and the brand was sold on 23 December 2024 to Roland Palmer, a great-grandson of the founder. It was relaunched as a smaller chain, with roughly 44 branches opened within two months.
