AstroAI's $40 minifridge: 249,100 recalled after two fires burned $360,000
A $40 Amazon bestseller's switch could short: 70 reports of smoking or melting, two fires, $360,000 in damage. 249,100 recalled; made in Shaoxing.

What happened
AstroAI's 4-litre minifridge — a $40, six-can cube that topped Amazon gift lists — sold about 249,100 units online from June 2019 to June 2022. It was manufactured by Shaoxing Shangyu North Electron in China and sold under the AstroAI brand.
The fridge's electrical switch can short circuit. CPSC received at least 70 reports of the units smoking, burning, melting or catching fire; two fires caused more than $360,000 in property damage. No injuries were reported. On June 18, 2025, AstroAI recalled all 249,100.
The remedy is a free replacement — cheap, because the failure was. A bestseller built to a $40 price carries its risk in the smallest component, and the recall is the line item the price never included.
Why it happened
- The electrical switch could short circuit — in a $40 appliance the component budget is where the fire risk is priced in
- 70 reports of smoking, burning and melting preceded the recall; two fires did over $360,000 of damage before 249,100 units were called in
- Sold on Amazon for three years and made in Shaoxing, the brand's cheapest product became its most expensive headline
The lesson
At $40 the switch is the product — a bestseller's cheapest component became 70 smoke reports, two fires and a recall a quarter-million units wide.
