HearsayWidely repeated, and we cannot show you a document for it. Read it for the lesson, not as fact.

What it means today

Founders selling into a global network: ask what your name is worth to the buyer's brand portfolio. If the answer is 'a step in the integration', write its survival into the contract — the day a global rebrand arrives, local history is not consulted.

What happened

Sebastián Arrechedera and Juan Claverol founded Arrechedera Claverol in Mexico City in 2007. By 2016 the agency counted a team of 90 professionals, and one account was already global: the two shops had been working together on Intel's worldwide business. On 12 May 2016 McGarryBowen, part of Dentsu Aegis Network, announced the acquisition and renamed the agency AC/McGarryBowen — with Claverol as co-chairman and director of business and client service, Arrechedera as co-chairman and creative director.

On 5 February 2021, the five-year post-sale contract completed, both founders left the Japanese holding to follow separate paths. Their own words: 'Cumplimos con nuestros clientes, con nuestros socios comerciales, pero sobre todo cumplimos nuestro sueño' — we delivered for our clients and our partners, but above all we fulfilled our dream. They left the existing team in charge, with emblematic accounts such as Volkswagen and izzi.

Then, on 21 June 2022, announced from Cannes, Dentsu launched Dentsu Creative — and three agencies ceased to exist as brands: DentsuMB, the former McGarryBowen, together with 360i and Isobar. Mexico City was one of the three launch markets in Latin America. The founders' name had come off the shop in 2021; now what the network had renamed it to disappeared from the network's own portfolio. The operation continues — the public registry still lists the legal entity as Arrechedera y Claverol SA de CV.

Why it happened

  • The sale preserved the founders' name only for the length of the post-sale contract: five years, and the door was renamed when it ran out.
  • The erasure was not about this shop: when Dentsu consolidated its creative brands worldwide, DentsuMB went with 360i and Isobar — a portfolio decision no local result could avert.
  • The founders framed the exit as a fulfilled dream — the cost only shows later, when the name they built becomes a line item in a brand consolidation.

The lesson

When you sell to a network, your name is a line item in its portfolio strategy — it survives as long as it serves, and no local result protects it.
