Arctic Zone Titan Pro: a latch magnet that can slip into a child's throat

The front-latch magnet on ~2,500 Titan Pro 40-can coolers can detach — a swallow hazard. Sold at Costco; free replacement latch from Jun 2026.

What happened

California Innovations recalled about 2,500 Arctic Zone Titan Pro 40-can coolers in June 2026 — the magnet inside the front latch can detach, and a swallowed magnet can cause serious injury or death.

The coolers sold at Costco stores nationwide in March 2026. Owners stop use and contact California Innovations for a free replacement latch and repair kit; no injuries were reported.

A loose magnet is small enough to swallow and strong enough to damage from the inside — the latch held the lid and not the magnet.

Why it happened

  • Latch magnet can detach — swallow hazard of serious injury or death; ~2,500 coolers sold at Costco Mar 2026; free replacement latch
  • A swallowed magnet closes on tissue from the inside — the hazard is the strength that makes the latch satisfying
  • One season at Costco, one latch redesign — the magnet's seat was the whole engineering

The lesson

A magnet in a consumer product is a promise that it stays seated for the product's whole life. The latch that loses its magnet ships the strongest part of the cooler as the most dangerous one.
