What happened

Amsterdam — David O. Russell's period mystery starring Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington, produced by New Regency and released by 20th Century Studios — cost $80 million and carried one of the most star-heavy casts of the year.

Released October 7, 2022, it grossed $31.2 million worldwide — one of the worst returns of the year for a film with a mainstream cast. Deadline's annual cost analysis calculated the net loss at $108.4 million, one of 2022's biggest bombs.

The failure was a verdict on the auteur-brand model: Russell's films had been hits, so the studio funded his passion project on faith — and the reviews' attacks on the film's tone and the director's own history turned the release into a referendum. The stars could not save a film its own director had lost the audience for.
