Alexander L. Kielland: a 6mm weld failed — 123 died as the rig capsized in 20 minutes

The North Sea's deadliest rig capsized when a 6mm weld on a sonar mount broke — the leg fell, the rig turned turtle, and 123 of 212 crew died in 20 minutes.

What happened

The Alexander L. Kielland was a Norwegian semi-submersible drilling rig built by CFEM in Dunkerque, France, and launched in 1976. By March 1980, it was working as a flotel — a floating hotel for Phillips Petroleum, housing 212 crew working on the Edda 2/7C production platform in the Ekofisk field. It was one of five sister rigs of the same Pentagone 89 design.

On 27 March 1980, a North Sea storm with 40-knot winds and 12-metre waves set the rig rolling. A fatigue crack in bracing D-6 — originating from a small 6 mm fillet weld joining a flange that held a sonar transducer — finally gave way. The design lacked structural redundancy: when D-6 broke, the failure cascaded. One of the rig's five columns collapsed, the rig listed to 30 degrees, and it capsized within 20 minutes. Only 89 of 212 crew survived; 123 died, the deadliest offshore disaster in Norwegian waters.

The commission of inquiry reported in 1981, attributing the failure to the fatigue crack from poor welding during construction and the design's absence of structural redundancy. Norwegian and international regulators tightened rules for offshore command structures, lifeboat release hooks that could operate under load, and structural redundancy requirements. In 2025, Norway's Storting voted to award compensation to survivors and families after a study found the original investigations had let them down.

Why it happened

  • CFEM's 6 mm fillet weld joining the sonar flange to bracing D-6 had lamellar tearing and cold cracks — the defect grew invisibly under North Sea waves until the brace snapped.
  • The Pentagone 89 design lacked structural redundancy — when D-6 failed, no alternative load path existed, so the failure cascaded through the entire rig until one of the five legs collapsed.
  • The rig capsized in 20 minutes — at a 30-degree list it turned turtle, giving crew no time to launch lifeboats and jamming release hooks under the unnatural angle.
  • Four sister rigs shared the same Pentagone 89 design — none were modified after the disaster, meaning a fleet-wide structural risk went uncorrected until after 123 people died.

The lesson

Aftermath

The Norwegian commission of inquiry reported 1981, attributing the capsize to poor welding during CFEM's construction and the design's lack of structural redundancy. Regulators tightened offshore safety rules: mandatory on-load lifeboat hooks, clear abandonment command authority, and redundancy requirements. The Broken Chain memorial was erected in 1986. In June 2025, Norway's Storting voted compensation to survivors and families after a study found the original investigations had failed them.
