怎么回事

From 27 April 2026, Japanese cosmetics maker Utena ran transit ads on JR Yamanote Line trains for its Utena Moisture skincare line. On 1 May it released a fully AI-generated promotional video, 'Uruoi Senshi Moisture' ('Moisture Warrior'), in which a magical-girl heroine fought dryness with the product.

The character's design, transformation sequence and title format echoed 'Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon' closely enough that fans and commentators on social media said it read as a copy rather than a homage — even though Utena had used no copyrighted material and had broken no law.

The criticism escalated into a broader pile-on about generative AI ads trading on the visual language of beloved franchises without paying for the association. On 6 May, Utena apologized, saying it took the feedback seriously and that the work 'lacked respect for the originality and cultural background of existing creative works' and consideration for fans who love them. It deleted the YouTube video and pulled the transit ads.

为什么会这样

  • Legally clean is not the same as culturally clean — an AI ad can clear every copyright check and still read as trading on someone else's franchise the moment its silhouette matches.
  • A generated character built to evoke 'magical girl' inevitably lands near the genre's most famous example — genre pastiche and unlicensed homage look identical from the outside.
  • Once the internet decided it was Sailor Moon, no explanation about originality mattered — the picture had already made its case before Utena said a word.

教训

Utena's AI-made skincare ad broke no law — its magical-girl heroine just looked enough like Sailor Moon that fans called it theft. The apology and takedown followed within a week.

后来呢

Utena deleted the promotional video from its official YouTube channel and removed the transit ad placements. It did not name Toei Animation or Naoko Takeuchi, saying only that the resemblance to 'existing creative works' had not been given due respect.
