SWISS skipped a valve fix to save money — 8 years later a decompression forced a mayday

Airbus recommended replacing A330 skin check valves in 2016. SWISS declined on cost grounds; in 2024 one failed mid-flight, forcing an emergency descent.

怎么回事

In 2016, Airbus issued a safety bulletin recommending airlines replace the skin check valves on its A330 aircraft after receiving reports of failures. The one-way valves stop pressurized cabin air from escaping through the fuselage skin.

SWISS considered the recommendation in 2017 and decided against replacing the valves on its fleet, citing cost. The airline judged the existing valves reliable enough, even though the aircraft were already due for a mandatory 24-month inspection of the same components — a routine that would have made replacement straightforward to schedule.

On 13 September 2024, flight LX-18 from Zurich to Newark, carrying 205 people, suffered a pressurization failure during its initial climb when a damaged skin check valve gave way. The cabin could not pressurize; the crew deployed oxygen masks, declared a mayday, and descended at 5,000 feet per minute before returning to Zurich for an overweight landing. Nobody was injured. Investigators later called the 2017 decision not to replace the valve "incomprehensible from a safety perspective."

为什么会这样

  • The manufacturer's own safety bulletin identified the exact failure mode eight years before it happened, and the airline weighed that warning against the cost of replacement and chose cost.
  • The valve was already covered by a routine 24-month inspection cycle, so replacing it would have added little disruption — removing the usual justification that a fix disrupts schedule.
  • The airline's own judgment that the part was reliable enough overrode the manufacturer's documented finding that it was failing, with nothing else backing that call.
代价mayday declared, emergency descent, 205 aboard, no injuries代价高昂

教训

A manufacturer's safety bulletin is not a suggestion to weigh against cost — declining it on cost grounds is choosing to find out the hard way whether the manufacturer was right.

后来呢

The aircraft landed safely in Zurich with no injuries. Accident investigators identified the 2017 decision not to replace the valve as the root cause and criticized it directly.
