Il Sole 24 Ore Launches an Upmarket Free Daily in Two Cities, Then Folds It Overnight

A free afternoon paper for Rome and Milan's business class lasted two and a half years before an ad slump killed it with no warning.

对今天的意义

A textbook case for any product that depends on one revenue stream and one or two test markets: the downturn arrives before you've proven the format travels.

怎么回事

On 20 November 2006, Italy's financial-press group Il Sole 24 Ore launched 24 Minuti, a free afternoon tabloid aimed at an upmarket, business-minded readership rather than the commuter crowd the existing free papers chased. It ran only in Rome and Milan, handed out near metro stops and business districts, with a print run reported around 250,000 copies.

It was pitched as the first Italian free daily built for readers who already bought Il Sole 24 Ore's flagship paper in the morning: a lighter, quicker second read for the afternoon, positioned on quality over reach. The bet never left its two launch cities to test whether the format could travel to Turin, Bologna or Naples.

The 2008-09 financial crisis hit newspaper advertising hard, and free dailies lived entirely on ad revenue. On 1 April 2009 the group announced 24 Minuti would close immediately, citing the collapse of the Italian ad market. The Radiocor newsroom had already struck on 27 March, and the journalists' union FNSI said the closure came with no prior discussion with the editorial committee.

The paper had run for two years and four months. Management framed the shutdown as forced by market conditions rather than a verdict on the format itself, and offered no revival plan for the title or its city footprint.

为什么会这样

  • The format was tested in only two cities, so the company never learned whether an upmarket free paper could travel beyond Rome-Milan before the ad market removed the chance to find out.
  • A free daily has one revenue line — advertising — and no subscriber base to cushion a downturn; when 2008-09 ad spending fell, the paper had nothing else to fall back on.
  • The closure was executed abruptly and without consulting the editorial committee, turning a market-driven decision into a labor dispute that added a strike on top of the shutdown.

教训

A single-revenue-line product tested in only two cities has no reserve and no proof it travels when the market that funds it turns.

后来呢

24 Minuti was not revived or sold. Its closure came amid a broader retrenchment in Italian free press — rivals Metro and City also cut editions and staff in the same downturn — as advertising-only newspaper formats lost ground first to the crisis and then permanently to digital.
