Fashion, Italy's 55-year trade magazine, shut overnight when the ads ran out
Italy's B2B fashion weekly, founded 1970, was closed with immediate effect Dec 16 2025 — parent DFV Mediagroup liquidated its publisher as ad budgets vanished.

What happened
On December 16, 2025, Edizioni Ecomarket Srl — the publisher of the Italian trade magazine Fashion and its sister title The SPIN OFF — announced it was entering voluntary liquidation with immediate effect, closing the magazine after more than 50 years. The decision was made by the publisher's owner, Germany's DFV Mediagroup, and the closure was announced without a final issue.
Fashion traced its roots to G.T. Giornale Tessile, founded in 1970 under director Gianni Bertasso, and became 'Fashion, il settimanale della moda italiana' in 1980. Sold to the German DFV Mediagroup in 1999, it served as a reference point for the entire Italian fashion system — fashion houses, entrepreneurs, buyers, showrooms and journalists — as one of the sector's longest-running trade titles.
DFV executive board member Markus Gotta said the closure was driven by a lack of advertising revenue and structural change in the market: 'The advertising budgets of the specialised communication sector have sharply declined, and we have not been able to compensate for this loss.' Readership remained healthy, he said, but the results were no longer sufficient for the company to continue the publication.
The magazine's farewell editorial, signed by editorial director Tobias Bayer, acknowledged the loss to the industry it served: the title had chronicled Italian fashion's rise since 1980 and its decline in the 2020s — a decline that its own business model mirrored, as the made-in-Italy system cut the marketing budgets that had funded the magazine for five decades.
Why it happened
- Revenue was concentrated in print advertising from the industry it covered — when those budgets moved to digital, the title had no replacement line.
- A B2B trade title inherits the health of its sector: as made-in-Italy fashion came under pressure in the 2020s, the media living off its marketing budgets declined with it.
- After 25 years under a foreign parent, a niche Italian title could not win investment against group priorities — DFV weighed falling results and chose liquidation over restructuring.
The lesson
A trade publication that lives on its own industry's ad budgets inherits that industry's decline — when the sector cuts marketing, the media covering it goes first.
Aftermath
Fashion and The SPIN OFF ceased publication with immediate effect on December 16, 2025, without a final issue. Editorial director Tobias Bayer published a farewell note thanking readers and the fashion system that had supported the title since 1980. The closure was covered by Pambianco News and the magazine's own channels.
