Playmobil's owner refused every film license, including Star Wars
Horst Brandstätter turned down licensing deals for decades on principle, leaving Playmobil far behind Lego as licensed franchises took over the toy aisle.

对今天的意义
A brand principle that made sense at launch can quietly become a competitive handicap; the discipline is knowing when to re-open a decision you once called permanent.
怎么回事
Horst Brandstätter, the owner who commissioned designer Hans Beck to create Playmobil in 1974, ran the company on a founding principle: figures should have no fixed identity, so a child's imagination fills in the character. A licensed figure from a film or game arrives with its personality already decided.
For decades that principle meant a flat refusal of film and franchise tie-ins, Star Wars included, even as competitor Lego built an enormous business licensing exactly those properties. In a rare interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung shortly before his death, Brandstätter explained: licensed figures fix the character in advance, and 'I don't see why one should make George Lucas rich.'
He also argued licensed toys have a shelf life tied to a film's popularity, while a plain Playmobil knight or astronaut gets handed down for generations: 'Playmobil should not be thrown away, it gets inherited.' The company kept building its own unbranded worlds — construction workers, knights, astronauts — instead of Star Wars sets or Harry Potter figures.
Brandstätter died in June 2015, still Playmobil's sole owner, with Forbes estimating his fortune near $1.2 billion and the company's revenue around $700 million. Lego, which had committed to licensing years earlier, went on to sales roughly ten times Playmobil's.
为什么会这样
- The owner treated a creative principle as non-negotiable even as the toy market shifted decisively toward licensed franchise merchandise.
- He rejected royalty payments to studios like Lucasfilm on philosophical grounds rather than evaluating them as a business trade-off.
- Refusing licenses for decades meant the change, when it finally came after his death, arrived too late to catch up to Lego's head start.
教训
A founding principle worth protecting still needs to be re-tested against the market it was written for, not defended forever on its original terms.
后来呢
Playmobil only began pursuing licenses — Ghostbusters, How to Train Your Dragon, and later a Taylor Swift-styled Eras Tour set — after Brandstätter's 2015 death, under the next generation of leadership. By then Lego's licensed lines (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Barbie) had built a sales lead reported at roughly ten times Playmobil's, and Playmobil went through a subsequent revenue slide, falling from about €757 million to €490 million between 2021 and 2024.
