OceanSaver called its laundry pods 'plastic-free' — a rival's complaint got the ad banned

OceanSaver marketed laundry pods as 'plastic-free' and 'biodegradable.' Rival Ecover complained, and the ASA ruled the claims unsubstantiated.

怎么回事

OceanSaver advertised its laundry capsules — made with a PVOH (polyvinyl alcohol) film — as 'zero microplastics,' 'plastic-free,' 'biodegradable film' and claimed the product prevented 'over two million pieces of plastic' from reaching the sea. The pods were marketed as a guilt-free alternative to conventional plastic packaging.

Rival cleaning brand Ecover complained to the UK's Advertising Standards Authority, arguing the claims misrepresented PVOH — a material that is technically plastic and whose biodegradability depends on specific conditions rarely met in ordinary use or ordinary wastewater treatment.

In April 2025 the ASA ruled the claims 'zero microplastics,' 'plastic-free' and 'so you don't harm the sea' had not been substantiated, and that 'biodegradable film,' 'fully biodegrade' and the two-million-pieces claim were also unsubstantiated and likely to mislead. OceanSaver was ordered to stop running the ads in their current form.

为什么会这样

  • A material can be technically true and still misleading — PVOH is 'plastic' by definition, and marketing that leans on 'plastic-free' lets the label do work the chemistry doesn't support.
  • 'Biodegradable' needs a stated condition to mean anything — a claim that leaves out the disposal method most consumers will actually use invites exactly the challenge OceanSaver got.
  • Environmental marketing is now competitive terrain, not just regulatory terrain — a rival brand, not just a watchdog, has an incentive to police a competitor's green claims.

教训

OceanSaver called its pods 'plastic-free.' A rival's complaint and an ASA ruling found the claim, and the biodegradability claims behind it, unsubstantiated.

后来呢

OceanSaver was required to stop the ads as they stood; the ruling set a marker for how PVOH-based 'plastic-free' claims are treated across the UK cleaning-products category.
