Match Group promised a free subscription if you didn't find love — with hidden conditions

Match.com's guarantee of a free six months had hidden conditions, the FTC said, on top of hard-to-cancel billing and emails touting messages from known bots.

怎么回事

Match.com's marketing offered new subscribers a guarantee: pay for six months and if they did not 'meet someone special,' the next six months were free. The FTC alleged the guarantee came with onerous, poorly disclosed conditions users had to meet to qualify, so many who paid and didn't find a match never got the promised free period.

The FTC's complaint also covered subscription mechanics beyond the guarantee: Match allegedly suspended the accounts of users who disputed charges with their card issuer, cutting off service they had already paid for, and made cancellation deliberately difficult. Separately, the agency said Match sent marketing emails touting new messages from senders the company had already identified internally as likely bots or scammers, pushing recipients toward paid subscriptions to read messages Match knew weren't genuine.

Match Group settled on 12 August 2025 for $14 million, to be used for consumer redress, admitting no liability but agreeing to permanently stop the challenged advertising, cancellation and billing practices. The company said it was prepared to take the case to trial but chose to resolve it instead.

为什么会这样

  • A prominent guarantee was marketed without the conditions needed to claim it disclosed clearly, so the headline promise and the fine print described two different offers.
  • Suspending disputed accounts rather than resolving disputes let the company keep payment for service it had stopped providing, aligning its incentive against fixing billing complaints.
  • Marketing emails about 'new messages' were sent even when Match's own systems had flagged the senders as likely bots, monetizing engagement the company knew wasn't real.

教训

A headline offer is only as honest as its conditions are visible. If claiming a guarantee needs conditions the customer never saw, the guarantee was never really offered.

后来呢

The settlement required Match Group to overhaul its cancellation flow and stop the specific guarantee, billing-dispute and bot-notification practices named in the complaint, on top of a separate 2024 FTC case against Match over fake-profile-driven engagement.
