The 49ers and YouTube dropped Dr Disrespect in the same week

Days after he admitted to inappropriate messages to a minor, the 49ers cut their partner and YouTube suspended his monetization.

What happened

On June 25, 2024, streamer Dr Disrespect — Herschel 'Guy' Beahm — confirmed on X that in 2017 he had exchanged messages with a minor through Twitch's private whisper system, messages that he said 'sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate.' He insisted that 'nothing illegal happened, no pictures were shared, no crimes were committed, I never even met the individual.'

The same day, the San Francisco 49ers — who had partnered with him since 2022, featuring him at the NFL draft and at a playoff game — ended the relationship. A team spokesperson said: 'We take these developments seriously and will not be working with him going forward.'

Three days later, on June 28, YouTube suspended monetization on his channel 'for violating our Creator Responsibility policy' and removed him from its Partner Program. Gaming headset maker Turtle Beach also ended its partnership with him, and the game studio he had co-founded moved to distance itself.

Why it happened

  • The 49ers' partnership was with a personality, so the personality's own admission was the event — the statement and the cut landed on the same day.
  • YouTube's Creator Responsibility policy gave the platform a standing lever: monetization was suspended within days of the admission, without waiting for any legal finding.
  • The team's two-year partnership, built on draft-day appearances and goodwill, ended in one sentence — a sponsorship is a claim of shared values that broke the day it could no longer be defended.

The lesson

A sponsorship is a claim of shared values that breaks the day the partner admits to something the audience can't square with it — the 49ers' exit took one sentence, YouTube's took three days.

Aftermath

Turtle Beach ended its relationship with him as well, and the game studio he co-founded, Midnight Society, cut him loose. YouTube restored his monetization in January 2025, but the partnership era was over — the team, the sponsor and the platform had all made their positions public.
