Marco Moreo's recovery plan was rejected on a technicality — 22 jobs went with it

The Italian footwear chain had clawed back to balanced books, but a tax-agency objection sank its restructuring plan and the court ordered liquidation.

Marco Moreo · 2025-07-03

怎么回事

Marco Moreo, founded in 1987, made artisanal footwear and ran multi-brand concept stores in Gallarate, Porto San Giorgio and Montecosaro, selling clothing, accessories and design pieces alongside its own shoes. The pandemic left it carrying over €900,000 in debt and full warehouses it could not move.

From 2022 the company worked a ten-year recovery plan approved by state-backed lender Mediocredito Centrale and other creditors, and by 2025 its owner said the business had operating budgets back in balance, with continued backing from banks, suppliers and its 22 employees.

That recovery did not save it. The Agenzia delle Entrate — Italy's tax authority — objected that it had not been given the full 90 days the law allows to examine the restructuring plan before approval. The Tribunale di Macerata rejected the plan on that procedural ground and declared Marco Moreo in judicial liquidation on July 3, 2025. Stores in Gallarate and Porto San Giorgio were emptied in clearance sales through August, and an appeal was launched against the ruling.

为什么会这样

  • The company treated a multi-year recovery plan as settled once creditors and its own numbers had come round, without confirming every statutory party had exhausted its review window.
  • A single procedural objection from one creditor, raised on timing rather than the plan's substance, was enough to override banks, suppliers and employees who had all already signed on.
  • The business had no fallback between an approved plan and full liquidation once the court ruled — no smaller concession existed to satisfy the tax agency short of restarting the process.

教训

A restructuring plan that satisfies every major creditor can still fail on one statutory party's procedural objection — clearing every review window is part of the plan, not paperwork around it.

后来呢

The Gallarate and Porto San Giorgio stores held clearance sales in August 2025 before closing; hundreds of customers queued for the discounts. The company's owner filed an appeal against the Macerata court's ruling, calling the liquidation unjustified given the business's operating recovery.
