Macintosh Portable: the 7.2 kg Mac that sold a tenth of forecast

Apple's 1989 Macintosh Portable, $5,799 and 7.2 kg, was dark and unwieldy — it sold ~10,000 in its first quarter against a 50,000 forecast.

怎么回事

Apple launched the Macintosh Portable on September 20 1989 as its first battery-powered Mac, a 16 MHz 68HC000 machine with a 9.8-inch monochrome screen and a trackball. It was priced at $5,799 — roughly three times the price of a desktop Mac — and weighed 15.8 pounds (7.2 kg), heavier than most luggage of the era.

The Portable made two ruinous trade-offs. To keep the screen readable and the battery long-lived, Apple chose an active-matrix LCD without a backlight, so the display was nearly invisible indoors; and the lead-acid battery made the machine enormous. Sales collapsed: Apple had forecast 50,000 in the first year but sold about 10,000 in the first quarter.

Apple cut the price to $4,799 and later quietly stopped selling the original, replacing it with the smaller, lighter Macintosh Portable with a backlit screen. On October 21 1991 Apple discontinued the line entirely as the far more successful PowerBook took its place — the Portable is remembered as Apple's first and heaviest laptop misstep.

为什么会这样

  • Apple prioritised a long battery life and a large screen over usability, choosing a non-backlit LCD that was nearly unreadable indoors — the single feature that defined the product's failure.
  • Apple priced the Portable at $5,799, about three times a desktop Mac, so the portability it promised was not worth the premium for most buyers.
  • At 7.2 kg the Portable was portable in name only, and Apple repeated the mistake with a second heavy model before the lighter PowerBook finally showed the category it should have built first.

教训

A portability claim is only as good as the product. Apple's Macintosh Portable was priced like a statement, weighed like a suitcase, and its screen could not be read — 'portable' became the punchline.

后来呢

Apple cut the Portable's price to $4,799, then shipped a backlit revision, and finally discontinued the line on October 21 1991 in favour of the smaller, cheaper PowerBook, which went on to define the modern laptop. The Portable remains a cautionary early Apple hardware flop.
