Fireball's darts pun 'Go for the double' was banned for encouraging a double shot
A bus stop poster with a dartboard and two overflowing shot glasses: Sazerac said 'double' meant darts. The ASA said it meant pour twice.

怎么回事
In January 2026 a UK bus stop poster for Fireball, the cinnamon whisky liqueur marketed by Sazerac UK under the Hi-Spirits name, showed the bottle beside two overflowing shot glasses and a dartboard with a dart in the double 20, under the headline 'FIREBALL — GO FOR THE DOUBLE!'. Small print at the bottom pointed to drinkaware.co.uk.
Sazerac argued that 'go for the double' was a common darts term for aiming at a double-scoring segment, a light-hearted nod to pub culture, and that the two glasses suggested social drinking — 'even two consecutive alcohol measures were not excessive'. The ASA was unconvinced: in a spirits ad, consumers would read 'double' as a 50ml double measure, and the overflowing glasses suggested 'abundance and excess rather than a standard measurement'.
On 1 April 2026 the ASA upheld the complaint under CAP rule 18.1: the ad was likely to encourage excessive drinking and must not appear again in that form. A pun that works on the dartboard became a pouring instruction at the bar.
为什么会这样
- A pun has two readings, and an alcohol ad is judged on the one that sells more product: 'double' landed as a 50ml pour, not a dartboard segment.
- Two overflowing shot glasses did the work the words could not defend — the image read as excess whatever the caption meant.
- 'Two measures isn't excessive' defends the quantity, not the encouragement: rule 18.1 polices ads that nudge people to drink more, and the poster nudged.
教训
Alcohol ads are judged on the reading that sells more drink: Fireball's darts pun 'go for the double' was banned as an invitation to pour twice. Wordplay is a liability in spirits.
后来呢
Sazerac UK t/a Hi-Spirits was told to ensure future ads are socially responsible and do not encourage excessive drinking. The ruling joined a long line of ASA decisions in which a double meaning in an alcohol ad resolves, for regulatory purposes, toward the extra drink.
