怎么回事
In October 2021, Dabur's Fem Bleach brand released a Karwa Chauth ad showing two women preparing together for the festival — traditionally observed by wives fasting for their husbands' wellbeing — before revealing they were a same-sex couple celebrating it together.
Madhya Pradesh home minister Narottam Mishra publicly directed the state police chief to convey to Dabur that the ad should be withdrawn, and warned of legal action if the company did not comply — treating a private company's ad as a matter for police intervention.
Dabur withdrew the ad from all its social media handles within hours and issued an unconditional apology: 'Fem's Karwachauth campaign has been withdrawn from all social media handles and we unconditionally apologise for unintentionally hurting people's sentiments.'
为什么会这样
- A minister's warning of legal action is not the same as a legal order — Dabur complied before any court weighed in, treating a political threat as if it already had the force of law.
- An 'unconditional apology,' issued under a police-relayed threat, reads as capitulation rather than reconsideration — the speed told the audience which pressure had actually worked.
- Running a progressive campaign carries a specific risk where an official can threaten 'legal steps' informally — the creative choice and the political exposure were never separable here.
教训
Dabur's Fem ad showed a same-sex Karwa Chauth couple. A minister threatened legal action through the police, and Dabur pulled the ad and apologized within hours.
后来呢
The withdrawal drew its own backlash from LGBTQ advocates and commentators who said Dabur had caved to political pressure rather than defended the ad. India's then-Chief Justice later cited the episode publicly as an example of intolerance forcing content off the air.
