Three Indian rulers united at Buxar — with the army that already lost at Plassey

Shah Alam II, Mir Qasim and Shuja-ud-Daula massed 40,000 men on the old formula of scale and cavalry. Munro's 7,000 drilled troops broke them in hours.

对今天的意义

A moat, patent wall or tariff regime built on an old formula — outspend, outlast, out-scale — can be upgraded piece by piece and still lose to a smaller rival organised around a genuinely different way of competing.

怎么回事

Seven years after Plassey, the East India Company had already shown what a small force of drilled infantry with integrated field artillery could do to a much larger South Asian army built around cavalry and numbers. In 1764 three of the era's most powerful rulers combined against the Company anyway: the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II, the deposed Nawab of Bengal Mir Qasim, and the Nawab of Awadh Shuja-ud-Daula.

Their plan rested on a formula that had held Mughal order together for two centuries: assemble the largest coalition under nominal imperial authority, and the field belongs to whoever fields the most men. Mir Qasim was not blind to the new threat — he had built an arms works at Monghyr producing muskets and artillery rated on a par with European work. But that weaponry was bolted onto three courts' worth of retainers and cavalry, never welded into one drilled, centrally commanded force. The coalition's roughly 40,000 troops were joined by a shared enemy, not a shared command.

At Buxar on 22 October 1764, Major Hector Munro's roughly 7,000 Company troops — a minority of them British, the rest sepoys and cavalry trained to the same drill — met the coalition and broke it within hours. Shuja-ud-Daula's wing pulled back and cut the boat-bridge behind the army, severing its own retreat. The battle that was supposed to prove numbers still mattered ended the same way Plassey had.

The Treaty of Allahabad in 1765 followed: Mir Qasim lost Bengal for good, Shah Alam II was pensioned and Awadh became a buffer state, and the Company received the diwani — the right to collect revenue across Bengal, Bihar and Orissa. Historians generally treat Buxar, not Plassey, as the battle that actually put Company rule on a permanent footing.

为什么会这样

  • The coalition's core strategy — the largest allied force under nominal Mughal authority wins — had checked internal rivals for two centuries and was applied unchanged against a different kind of army
  • Mir Qasim's Monghyr arms works modernised the weapons, but the coalition never built the integrated command and drill that made those weapons effective on a battlefield
  • Three separate courts joined by a common enemy, not a unified command; under pressure Shuja-ud-Daula withdrew and destroyed the army's own line of retreat
  • This was the second time in seven years that massed, loosely coordinated numbers had met the Company's drilled infantry and field artillery — the lesson of Plassey (1757) went unlearned

教训

A coalition built for scale is not a coalition built for coordination. New weapons bolted onto an old command structure lose to a smaller force drilled for the fight actually in front of it.

后来呢

The Treaty of Allahabad (1765) gave the Company diwani rights over Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, making it the de facto ruler of the wealthiest part of the subcontinent while a Mughal emperor still nominally reigned. Awadh survived as a buffer state under Company influence, and no Indian coalition again tried to unseat the Company by combining courts under the old imperial banner.
