Bumble mocked celibacy on billboards — and pulled the campaign in three weeks

Bumble's billboards told women a vow of celibacy 'is not the answer.' The joke reached asexual and abuse-survivor readers, and Bumble apologised within weeks.

怎么回事

In April 2024 Bumble launched a redesign meant to revive lagging user interest, built around a new 'Opening Moves' feature. The campaign's billboards, concentrated around Los Angeles, ran lines like 'You know full well a vow of celibacy is not the answer' and 'Thou shalt not give up on dating and become a nun,' paired with a Twitter video ad built around a Bumble-themed nunnery.

The joke landed as an attack rather than encouragement. Commenters across social media said the copy invalidated women's sexual autonomy at a moment of heightened anxiety over reproductive rights, dismissed the asexual community's identity as a punchline, and ignored that celibacy is sometimes chosen after trauma or abuse rather than out of despair at dating.

On 13 May 2024, three weeks after launch, Bumble removed the ads from its global marketing campaign and posted an apology on Instagram: 'We made a mistake... instead of bringing joy and humor, we unintentionally did the opposite.' The company said it would donate to the National Domestic Violence Hotline and other groups supporting women, marginalised communities and abuse survivors, and offered the remaining time on its billboard bookings to those organisations.

为什么会这样

  • The joke assumed celibacy was self-evidently a problem to be solved, without testing that premise against the audiences who live it by choice, identity or trauma.
  • A brand built on defending women's autonomy ran copy that told women what the right relationship to sex and dating was, contradicting its own stated values.
  • The campaign shipped broadly — billboards, video, social — before anyone flagged how the same line would read to the asexual community and to abuse survivors.

教训

A joke that assumes the audience already agrees its premise is safe bets nobody in that audience feels targeted. Test a line against the people it's about, not just those it's meant to amuse.

后来呢

Bumble's apology was itself widely covered as an unusually direct, non-defensive mea culpa. The company kept its broader 'Opening Moves' product feature, which let women send a scripted opening line rather than the first message, separating the mechanic from the campaign that had promoted it.
