Boston Market owed staff $600,000 in wages — New Jersey shut down 27 locations over it
The rotisserie chicken chain fell from ~300 restaurants to 27 in a year as landlords evicted it and states closed stores over unpaid wages and taxes.

怎么回事
Boston Market entered 2023 with roughly 300 restaurants still operating under owner Jay Pandya. Over the course of that year, the chain stopped paying its bills across multiple fronts at once: landlords began evicting locations over unpaid rent, and state governments started shutting down restaurants directly over unpaid sales taxes and unpaid wages.
New Jersey authorities closed 27 Boston Market locations in the state after finding that staff were owed more than $600,000 in unpaid wages. Food distributor US Foods separately sued the chain over more than $11 million in unpaid bills, and a court later entered a default judgment ordering Boston Market to pay $11.9 million.
By March 2024, only about 27 Boston Market restaurants remained open nationwide, down from roughly 300 a year earlier. Pandya filed for the chain's bankruptcy protection in December 2023, but the filing was terminated by a judge after he failed to provide required insurance documents; a second bankruptcy filing was later dismissed as well for missed court deadlines.
为什么会这样
- The company stopped paying rent, food suppliers and staff wages simultaneously, letting landlords, vendors and state labor regulators all move against it at the same time.
- New Jersey's decision to close locations directly over unpaid wages showed regulators acting where the company itself would not pay what it owed employees.
- Two separate bankruptcy filings were dismissed for procedural failures — missing insurance documents, missed deadlines — suggesting it couldn't even execute the paperwork to reorganize.
- An $11.9 million default judgment to a single food distributor shows the scale of unpaid obligations that had built up before the public collapse became visible.
教训
When a chain stops paying rent, suppliers and staff all at once, landlords, vendors and regulators start shutting it down faster than any single bankruptcy filing can keep up with.
后来呢
Boston Market continued operating a small handful of locations after 2023's mass closures, with ownership still contested amid unresolved creditor claims. Jay Pandya's second bankruptcy filing was dismissed by a court, leaving the chain's remaining obligations unresolved through formal reorganization.
