Apple iPod Hi-Fi: the $349 speaker from Apple itself
Apple's own $349 dock speaker, launched in Feb 2006, silently discontinued in Sept 2007 — dead after a year and a half of lukewarm demand.

怎么回事
At a keynote in February 2006 Steve Jobs introduced the iPod Hi-Fi, Apple's own stereo speaker system for the iPod, priced at $349 — a premium product from the company itself in a market that was already crowded with hundreds of third-party iPod speaker docks selling for a fraction of the price.
The reception was muted from the start. Reviewers praised the sound and the ease of plug-and-play, but the $349 price, the absence of an FM radio, and a remote of limited function made it a hard sell against a sea of cheaper, smaller docks. Engadget's launch coverage described the introduction landing 'to deafening silence amidst a room full of hopeful tech journalists.'
Apple never released sales figures, and for the next year and a half the product was barely heard from again — until it silently dropped off Apple's online store in September 2007. Confirming the Hi-Fi's death, Apple said it was 'focusing priorities on the iPod and iPhone' and would not make more units, noting that hundreds of third-party speaker systems already served the market. The iPod Hi-Fi was discontinued about 18 months after launch.
为什么会这样
- Apple overpriced its accessory against a market it had created: hundreds of third-party iPod speakers sold for far less, so the $349 Apple-speaker gave no reason to pay the premium.
- The product solved a problem already solved: owners who wanted a speaker already had cheap options, and the Hi-Fi added Apple heft rather than a capability the market lacked.
- Apple treated it as a flagship but never gave it the roadmap or ecosystem support a real line needs — it was quietly cancelled rather than iterated.
教训
Brand equity does not justify a premium in a market you commoditised. Apple's $349 dock speaker faced cheaper third-party options — price against the category as it is, not as your logo wants it.
后来呢
The iPod Hi-Fi was discontinued in September 2007, about 18 months after launch. Apple never shipped a direct successor from its own brand, leaving the speaker market to third parties.
