Anthem: EA's live-service game made unplayable by its own shutdown
EA shut Anthem's servers in January 2026, making the once-$60 game unplayable online-only — the end of a 2019 launch that sold 5M copies against a 6M target.

怎么回事
Anthem was BioWare's 2019 attempt to turn its single-player reputation into a Destiny-style live-service shooter, backed by EA and years of development. Reviews were lukewarm — IGN scored it 6.5/10 — and the game was criticised as shallow and repetitive out of the box.
It sold about 5 million copies against an internal target of 6 million, falling short, and player numbers collapsed quickly. In February 2021 EA and BioWare announced they were abandoning the 'Anthem Next' rebuild and development ceased, leaving the game in its launch state.
On January 12, 2026, EA shut down Anthem's servers. Because the game is online-only, the shutdown rendered it permanently unplayable — the full cost of a live-service product whose service was switched off.
为什么会这样
- A live-service game was shipped without enough content to hold players, so sales fell short of the 6M target and the population collapsed before the roadmap mattered.
- Once the launch missed, the rebuild was cancelled rather than funded, so the product was frozen in its broken state and only slid toward shutdown.
- The online-only design made the shutdown terminal: with no offline mode, the server closure in 2026 deleted the game for every remaining owner.
教训
EA's Anthem sold 5M against a 6M target, its rebuild was cancelled, and the online-only game became unplayable when servers shut in 2026. A live-service title that ships thin has nothing to live on.
