Crichton pushed through repeated, sweeping script changes and re-edits during and after filming, extending the production timeline and requiring costly reshoots that pushed the cumulative budget from around $85 million past $100 million and eventually to a reported $160 million once delays and marketing were included.
The film opened to $61 million worldwide, losing an estimated $98-129 million depending on how the full production and marketing cost is counted — making it one of the biggest box office bombs of 1999 relative to its budget.
