Yeezy Season 4 made models stand in the midday sun — they fell one by one

On September 7, 2016, during New York Fashion Week, Kanye West staged the Yeezy Season 4 presentation on Roosevelt Island's Four Freedoms Park — an outdoor spectacle choreographed by artist Vanessa Beecroft, in which models stood motionless in tight bodysuits as a living installation while guests arrived by ferry and shuttle. The concept demanded stillness under the open sky. What the schedule did not account for was that the show would start an hour late, with the models already in position, in mid-30s heat.

The delay turned the concept into an endurance test. Standing in the direct sun, models began to sway and collapse — observers described them 'dropping like flies' — and only then did staff move through the ranks with water bottles. Washington Post critic Robin Givhan tweeted: 'Is this the show? Waiting until the models collapse one by one?' The Cut's Stella Bugbee wrote: 'This is cruelty.' When the presentation finally moved, the clothes failed too: model Amina Blue kicked off her thigh-high boots mid-runway, heels broke, and the suede-and-PVC footwear left several models barely able to walk.

The front row documented it in real time. New York Times fashion director Vanessa Friedman posted 'Model undone by the heat at Yeezy,' and later: 'Well, Kanye, that'll teach us.' Other guests could not tell whether a model sitting down was choreography or a medical event — the ambiguity was the point of the format, and its cost. Yeezy's next New York showing, Season 5, abandoned the island spectacle for a conventional runway; the industry remembered Season 4 as the night the spectacle was staged against the people wearing it.
