West Side Story: Spielberg's $100M remake that flopped at the box office

What happened
West Side Story was Steven Spielberg's long-planned big-screen remake of the 1957 Broadway musical, released by 20th Century Studios — by then a Disney subsidiary — in December 2021. The production budget was widely reported at $100 million.
The film opened December 10, 2021, took just over $10 million in its domestic opening weekend, and went on to gross about $76 million worldwide — $38.5 million domestic and $37.5 million international.
Because marketing and distribution roughly double a film's outlay, the trade estimate was that West Side Story needed to clear around $300 million worldwide just to break even. Landing at a quarter of that made the remake a costly commercial failure despite near-universal critical praise.
Why it happened
- Adapting a beloved 1950s stage musical as a nostalgic prestige film misread a 2021 audience that had largely moved on from the property.
- Releasing a musical against a crowded December holiday slate hurt; the film never built the opening-weekend heat a $100M movie needs.
- The pandemic-era theatrical window and Disney's simultaneous streaming strategy undercut what was already a niche, older-skewing audience.
The lesson
Critical acclaim does not pay a $100M bill. A remake must still have an audience when it opens.
