Wemakeprice, Korea's social commerce pioneer, collapsed with ₩5.8 trillion in damages

Wemakeprice, a top Korean social commerce platform, was declared bankrupt on 10 Nov 2025 after a payment crisis became Korea's largest e-commerce failure.

What happened

Wemakeprice was one of Korea's pioneering social commerce platforms, launched in 2010 alongside TMON and Coupang. It grew rapidly through aggressive marketing and discount-based customer acquisition, building a large user base in Korea's competitive e-commerce market. The platform connected sellers with consumers through time-limited deals and group-buying discounts.

In July 2024, Wemakeprice suffered a massive settlement delay crisis — the platform could not pay sellers for goods already sold, triggering a cascade of consumer refund claims, seller protests, and regulatory investigations. The company applied for corporate rehabilitation but failed to secure a buyer. Negotiations with Genesis BBQ and other potential acquirers collapsed. On 10 November 2025, the Seoul Bankruptcy Court declared Wemakeprice bankrupt.

The collapse left over 100,000 victims — small sellers who were never paid and consumers who had prepaid for undelivered orders — with total damages estimated at ₩5.8 trillion (approximately $4.4 billion). The failure was widely seen as the symbolic end of the 'open market' era in Korean e-commerce, caused by years of operating losses masked by ever-extending seller payment cycles.

Why it happened

  • Wemakeprice relied on extending seller payment cycles to cover operating deficits — effectively a Ponzi scheme that collapsed when the payment delays could no longer be concealed.
  • Aggressive expansion and excessive marketing costs generated years of operating losses that were never addressed, leaving the company with no financial buffer when the settlement crisis erupted.
  • Failed acquisition attempts — including the collapse of the Genesis BBQ deal — left Wemakeprice without a financial lifeline, forcing the court to convert rehabilitation into bankruptcy.

The lesson

An e-commerce platform that delays seller payments to fund operations is a time bomb — when sellers stop believing they will be paid, the business dies regardless of user numbers.

Aftermath

Wemakeprice was declared bankrupt on 10 November 2025. Over 100,000 sellers and consumers faced losses totalling ₩5.8 trillion. Small businesses that had relied on the platform for sales were pushed toward bankruptcy themselves. The collapse triggered a crisis of confidence in Korean e-commerce platforms, with regulators tightening payment settlement rules. Unlike TMON, which was acquired by Oasis and resumed operations in August 2025, Wemakeprice failed to find a buyer and was liquidated.
