Vodafone let Emma Raducanu's reported £3m-a-year deal lapse after four injury-hit years
Vodafone signed Raducanu on her 2021 US Open surge; four injury-hit years later, it declined a reported £3m-a-year renewal.

What happened
Emma Raducanu's 2021 US Open win made her one of the most marketable athletes in Britain almost overnight, and Vodafone was among the brands that bet on her, signing her as a global ambassador in 2022. The deal was reported to be worth around £3m a year.
Injuries, coaching changes and underwhelming results followed the title: Raducanu's best major run since 2021 was a fourth-round Wimbledon appearance, and her ranking slid to No. 47. In April 2025 the Mail on Sunday reported that Vodafone had decided against renewing. Vodafone refused to comment on the split; Raducanu's camp did not respond either.
The non-renewal ended the partnership quietly, without a scandal — the price of betting on a teenager's trajectory was simply written down. For Raducanu it removed her most lucrative single sponsorship in the middle of a comeback attempt; for Vodafone it closed a bet that had stopped paying.
Why it happened
- An endorsement signed at a moment of hype prices in future success; when the success did not arrive, the contract's value fell below its cost.
- No misconduct was involved — performance alone ended the deal, which is the quiet way most athlete endorsements die.
The lesson
A star endorsement is priced on trajectory, not history. When the trajectory stalls, the rational move is to walk away before the contract rolls over.
Aftermath
At the time of the split Raducanu was ranked 47th and had withdrawn from Britain's Billie Jean King Cup squad to prioritise her health; her 2024 endorsement income was around £9m, seventh among female athletes (Sportico). Vodafone did not comment publicly.
