Vimet bet €30M on two local banks — both collapsed, and the gold giant was bankrupt

Gold trader Vimet sank €30M into two Veneto banks; both collapsed and Vimet went bankrupt with €150M in debts.

Vimet S.p.A. · Veneto Banca · Banca Popolare di Vicenza · 2017-03

What happened

Vimet S.p.A. was a Vicenza gold processing and trading company founded in 1970, described as one of the first companies nationally — and beyond — for size in the processing and marketing of precious metals. In 2012 it reached a turnover of almost €800 million.

From 2012, Vimet invested around €30 million in shares of Veneto Banca and Banca Popolare di Vicenza, the two local banks that themselves collapsed in 2017. The stake was almost completely zeroed. In early 2016 the Guardia di Finanza opened a tax-fraud investigation into its large-scale gold trading, and the Arezzo refiner Chimet complained it had not been paid €10 million for delivered gold. Vimet filed for a creditor-protection arrangement (concordato con riserva) in summer 2016 and was declared bankrupt on 3 March 2017.

The liabilities came to about €150 million, of which €121 million were debts to banks; the concordato passivo reported in the application exceeded €163 million. Il Sole 24 Ore later reported that 2.1 tonnes of gold had disappeared from the warehouses of Vimet and the Trevigiano company Tecnigold.

Why it happened

  • The €30M concentrated bet on the two banks' shares: both collapsed in 2017, and the stake was written off almost completely.
  • The 2016 Guardia di Finanza tax-fraud probe and Chimet's €10M unpaid-gold complaint destroyed trust and dried up financing just as the gold trade stalled.
  • The company's debts were overwhelmingly bank debts — €121M of the €150M total — so once the stake was gone and credit tightened, there was nothing left to absorb the fall.
What it cost€150M in liabilities; the €30M stake was zeroedcatastrophic

The lesson

Betting company money on the shares of your own lenders doubles the risk: when the banks fail, the stake dies and credit tightens at once. Vimet's €30M bank bet was zeroed, and the gold giant fell.

Aftermath

Vimet was declared bankrupt on 3 March 2017. In July 2017 il Sole 24 Ore reported that 2.1 tonnes of gold had disappeared from the warehouses of Vimet and Tecnigold — 1.46 tonnes from Vimet alone, worth more than €50 million, about €10 million of it owed to Chimet. In January 2023 a court found Vimet's legal representative Mauro Angeli not guilty ('il fatto non sussiste') of issuing false transfer instructions covering gold-supply invoices worth €10,814,181.29.
