The Fall Guy: a $130M Ryan Gosling action movie that lost Universal about $50M

What happened

The Fall Guy, a stunt-heavy action comedy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, was Universal's big-budget summer bet for 2024, directed by David Leitch. Reported production costs ranged from $125 million to $150 million, with most trade publications listing $130 million.

It opened May 3, 2024 in a slot Universal had pushed back to after Deadpool & Wolverine moved off that date. The film grossed $181.1 million worldwide — $92.9 million domestic — against a production budget that trade reporting put at $130 million.

Because a theatrical film typically needs to clear roughly two-and-a-half times its production budget to break even once marketing and distribution are counted, the $181 million gross was far short. Several outlets reported Universal lost around $50 million on the release.

Why it happened

  • A $130M+ budget saddled a stunt spectacle — historically a niche genre — with blockbuster economics, so a solid-but-unspectacular gross could not pay for it.
  • Positioning a love letter to stunt work as a broad summer tentpole left it competing with the very comic-book and franchise films it parodied.
  • A May release in 2024 landed in a crowded window, and word-of-mouth never built the break-out momentum a movie of that cost needed.
What it cost~$50M estimated loss on a $125–150M budgetcostly

The lesson

A genre movie carrying blockbuster economics loses money even when it 'works' — cost and audience ceiling must match before greenlight.
