The Crow (2024): a $50M reboot that grossed $24M on a beloved franchise's name

Lionsgate's reboot of The Crow cost $50M to make plus $25M distribution and marketing, yet grossed just $24.1M worldwide.

What happened

The Crow, a reboot of the 1994 cult film that has since been rebooted repeatedly, was directed by Rupert Sanders and released August 23, 2024. It was made on a reported $50 million production budget.

Lionsgate acquired the film's distribution rights for $10 million and spent $15 million on print and advertising — $25 million on top of the $50 million production cost. The film grossed $9.3 million in the US and Canada and $14.8 million elsewhere, for a worldwide total of $24.1 million.

Against a combined production-plus-distribution cost of roughly $75 million, the $24.1 million worldwide gross left the movie far from breaking even, and it was widely described as a box office bomb.

Why it happened

  • The Crow's 1994 original earned cult status; a 2024 reboot carried the name without what made it matter.
  • A $50M budget plus $25M in distribution and marketing demanded a mainstream return that the franchise's cult audience could not generate.
  • Decades of failed reboot attempts had already diluted the property's commercial goodwill before this version even shipped.

The lesson

A cult film's name is not a hit-maker: rebooting it at blockbuster cost transforms loyal but small nostalgia into a loss.
