The Acolyte: Disney's $230M Star Wars show canceled after one season
Lucasfilm's $230.1M Star Wars series had Disney+'s biggest 2024 premiere and decent reviews — and was canceled after one season.

What happened
The Acolyte — a Star Wars mystery series created by Leslye Headland and produced by Lucasfilm — premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024 with an initially reported budget of about $180 million. Disney later disclosed the gross budget had grown to $230.1 million, with a net of $183.6 million after UK tax credits.
It was Disney+'s biggest series premiere of 2024: 4.8 million views on day one and 11.1 million in five days — though below Ahsoka's 14 million. Critics were mostly positive (79% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience was split, with an 18% audience score, and viewership fell off a cliff: the finale's 335 million Nielsen minutes were believed to be the lowest for any Star Wars series finale.
On August 19, 2024, Lucasfilm opted not to renew it — the first Star Wars live-action series canceled after a single season. Deadline noted Disney+'s renewal threshold for big-budget series costing well above $100 million per season; The Acolyte's cost, its polarized audience, and its fading viewership together ended the story.
Why it happened
- Cost decides renewal: at $230.1M, the series needed breakout viewership, and a finale with Star Wars' lowest Nielsen minutes made the second season an accounting question, not a creative one.
- The audience split was fatal: 79% of critics approved but 18% of audiences did — a polarized reception means no momentum, and Disney+ has no patience for controversy without growth.
- The $180M greenlight became a $230.1M bill: production went over budget, and a series that was supposed to be a mid-tier bet ended up costing like a tentpole.
The lesson
At $230M, decent reviews and a record premiere are not enough: The Acolyte's finale was Star Wars' lowest-rated week, and the renewal threshold is set by cost, not quality.
