What happened
Disney had been remaking its animated catalog into live action for fifteen years, and in 2025 it reached the film that founded the studio. Snow White opened on March 21, 2025, at a cost the company's own accounts later showed was far beyond plan: filings of Hidden Heart Productions, Disney's UK production vehicle, for the year ended December 31, 2024 recorded production costs of $336.5M and stated the film 'was forecasted to be over the production budget'.
The remake took in $87.2M domestically and closed at $205.7M worldwide. Against the production cost alone — before any marketing spend — Forbes calculated a theatrical loss of $168.7M when it reported the filing in February 2026, noting Disney's quarterly results had attributed a fall in entertainment operating income partly to higher programming and production costs. It was the clearest bill yet for the remake strategy: a story every audience already knew, rebuilt at record cost.
Why it happened
- A remake carries the ceiling of the original's familiarity: everyone knows Snow White, so few felt they had to see it again — while the budget demanded a record gross to break even.
- The production ran past its own budget plan, as Disney's UK filing disclosed — the break-even point moved upward while the audience stayed fixed.
- The remake slate substituted catalog recognition for a reason to return to theaters; each title cost more to make while the returns shrank.
The lesson
Recognition is not demand: a known title lowers marketing risk but caps curiosity. At $336.5M the film needed record turnout to break even, and familiarity could not supply it.
