What happened
Seo Bok, a science-fiction action film directed by Lee Yong-joo and starring Gong Yoo and Park Bo-gum, cost ₩16 billion and was released by CJ Entertainment in South Korea on April 15, 2021 — simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming platform TVING.
The film topped the domestic box office on opening day, but the day-and-date TVING release cut theater admissions, and it ended with just 385,409 domestic admissions and about US$6.8 million worldwide, with a Korean gross of only US$3.28 million.
Against a ₩16 billion budget, the theatrical run left CJ Entertainment well short of breaking even, making one of Korea's priciest sci-fi swings of the year a money-loser on the big screen.
