What happened
Secret Invasion — Marvel Studios' Disney+ series starring Samuel L. Jackson, based on one of the comics' biggest crossover events — cost $211.6 million for six episodes, roughly $35 million an episode. Disney's filings showed the series running over its production budget.
It premiered June 21, 2023 to the second-lowest audience of any MCU streaming series: 994,000 viewers in its first five days per Samba TV, ahead of only Ms. Marvel's 775,000 — against Loki's 2.5 million. Critics gave it 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, and TVLine named it one of the worst shows of 2023.
The failure was an economics lesson for the streaming era: the most expensive MCU series per episode delivered the franchise's weakest engagement, and no amount of star power or canon significance could make a $35M-per-episode show with a 52% score a reasonable investment.
Why it happened
- The cost was set by franchise habit, not by the show: at $211.6M for six episodes, Secret Invasion carried the production scale of a tentpole movie while delivering a TV series' audience.
- The story burned the source material's appeal: the comics' Skrull-paranoia thriller became a slow spy drama with muted action, and the audience that came for a Marvel event found a drama.
- Disney+ measured success in viewership that never came: the second-lowest premiere in MCU history meant no growth curve.
The lesson
Per-episode cost is the risk: at $211.6M for six episodes, Secret Invasion needed MCU-record viewership just to look reasonable — and delivered the franchise's second-lowest.
