A French chemist dropped a flask and it didn't shatter — he invented safety glass

In 1903, Édouard Bénédictus dropped a flask coated with cellulose nitrate. It cracked but held together. After a car crash, he realized it could save lives.

What happened

In 1903, French chemist Édouard Bénédictus was working in his laboratory when he dropped a glass flask. Instead of shattering into dangerous shards, the flask cracked but held its shape. The interior was coated with a dried film of cellulose nitrate — a plastic that had formed when a previous experiment had evaporated inside the flask.

Bénédictus filed the discovery away until he read about a car accident where two women were severely injured by flying glass. The connection struck him: the same plastic coating that held his flask together could protect people in automobile crashes. He filed a patent on November 25, 1909, and formed the Société du Verre Triplex in 1911 to manufacture laminated glass.

Early production was slow and expensive. The first major application was not cars but gas mask eyepieces during World War I. In 1912, the process was licensed to the British company Triplex Safety Glass. The product was marketed as 'Triplex' glass — a sandwich of two glass sheets with a plastic interlayer.

The modern breakthrough came in 1927 when Canadian chemists invented polyvinyl butyral (PVB), a plastic interlayer that did not discolor over time. By 1936, PVB safety glass had replaced the original cellulose nitrate version. The 1930 UK Road Traffic Act required safety glass windshields in new cars. A forgotten flask with dried plastic inside became the standard that has saved countless lives in every vehicle on the road.
