Robert Clergerie made French shoes for 45 years — then failed twice in two years

Robert Clergerie was a French shoe icon with 21 stores worldwide — but it went into receivership twice and was liquidated within two years.

What happened

Robert Clergerie started his career at Charles Jourdan in 1970 before buying the Joseph Fenestrier shoe factory in Romans-sur-Isère in 1978 and launching his own label. By its peak, the brand had 21 stores worldwide, making shoes known for their craftsmanship and French heritage. Roland Mouret became creative director in 2011.

On 29 March 2023, Clergerie Paris was placed in receivership, citing poor cash flow and rising losses. In July 2023, the brand was sold to Titan Industries. The rescue lasted 17 months: on 4 December 2024, Clergerie was placed in receivership again after Titan admitted it could not restructure the company due to continued losses.

On 8 April 2025, Clergerie Paris was placed into liquidation after the only acquisition bid was rejected by the commercial court. In May 2025, the brand was sold one last time, to Petrel 92 SL. A 45-year-old French shoe brand had been failed by two successive owners who could not make the numbers work.

Why it happened

  • First receivership (March 2023) was caused by poor cash flow and rising losses — the brand's cost base exceeded its revenue.
  • Titan Industries bought the brand but could not restructure — continued losses overwhelmed the new owner within 18 months.
  • The only acquisition bid at liquidation was rejected by the court, meaning no buyer saw enough value to save the company as a going concern.

The lesson

A craft brand needs more than new owners — two sets of buyers failed the same company in two years because the business model was the problem, not the product.

Aftermath

Robert Clergerie was placed into liquidation on 8 April 2025 after the commercial court rejected the only acquisition bid. In May 2025, the brand was sold to Petrel 92 SL for a fresh attempt. The 21-store network, the Joseph Fenestrier factory, and decades of French shoe craftsmanship were lost to two receiverships in two years.
