What it means today
When a weaker party offers to guide you into a market or conflict, ask what happens after you have removed their obstacle. The alliance may end the moment their rival does.
What happened
In 1292 Kublai Khan dispatched a large Yuan fleet to Java to punish King Kertanegara of Singhasari for insulting a Mongol envoy. By the time the fleet arrived in 1293 the situation had changed: Kertanegara was dead, killed by the usurper Jayakatwang, and Kertanegara's son-in-law Raden Wijaya was in exile with a small following.
Raden Wijaya sent envoys to the Mongols offering submission and guidance. He persuaded them that Jayakatwang, not the Javanese people, was the enemy. The Yuan forces joined Wijaya, marched on Daha, and destroyed Jayakatwang's army. With his rival gone, Wijaya had no further use for the alliance.
He invited the Mongol commanders to a feast to celebrate, then attacked their camp. The Yuan troops, weakened by tropical disease and unfamiliar terrain, were driven back to their ships. Raden Wijaya took the throne as Kertarajasa Jayawardhana and founded the Majapahit kingdom.
Why it happened
- The Mongols treated Wijaya's submission as genuine because it matched their purpose; they did not ask why an exile would want the invader to win
- Wijaya's enemy was Jayakatwang, not the Yuan; once Jayakatwang fell, the alliance had served its only purpose for him
- The Mongol fleet was vulnerable on land and suffering from disease, so the ally who knew the terrain held the real advantage
- The Yuan commanders assumed that defeating the usurper was the end of the campaign; Wijaya understood it was only the middle
The lesson
An ally who appears after the conflict begins is choosing you for his own schedule. His usefulness does not make his loyalty yours.
Aftermath
Raden Wijaya founded Majapahit and ruled as Kertarajasa Jayawardhana. The Yuan never returned to Java. The new empire would eventually dominate maritime Southeast Asia.
