Chicharito told women they were failing; PUMA and Chivas cut him loose in a week
When striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández posted videos saying women were 'failing', FMF fined him, Chivas dropped him and sponsor PUMA disowned the words.

What happened
Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández, a Mexican striker with spells at Manchester United and Real Madrid, played for Club Deportivo Guadalajara in 2025. In July that year he posted a run of videos telling women they were 'failing' and 'eradicating masculinity', urging them to recover their 'feminine energy' by caring, cleaning and multiplying, and to let themselves be led by a man. The clips spread across Spanish-language media within hours.
The response moved on three official tracks at once. The Mexican Football Federation's gender and diversity commission fined him and opened an investigation alongside Liga MX and the women's league. Chivas, whose internal rules allow fines of up to 90% of monthly pay, published a statement rejecting 'any expression that reinforces stereotypes', left him out of its Leagues Cup squad, and within days Mexican media reported he would not continue at the club — the contract was not renewed.
PUMA, the kit maker whose crest he wore, issued its own statement without naming him: the remarks were inadmissible and did not represent the brand or its ambassadors. The apology followed, but the commercial fact was already settled — in one week, the club's most marketable name had become a liability that every partner attached to it needed to publicly leave.
Why it happened
- Chivas' squad bet its commercial season on its most famous name — the assumption that his fame belonged to the club, not to whatever he chose to say next
- PUMA could not stay silent: its logo sits on the same shirt, and a values statement that names no one is the cheapest exit available to a sponsor that cannot cancel a whole club
- The federation fine was undisclosed and small by football standards; the real sanction was institutional — tournament exile, non-renewal and a kit sponsor's disowning in one week
The lesson
Fame is rented on someone else's behaviour. Chivas and PUMA had paid for a legend and woke up sponsoring a controversy — the values clause is only as strong as the week it is tested in.
Aftermath
Hernández apologised and said he would work on being 'a better version' of himself. He left Guadalajara without a renewal, and in July 2026 signed for Atlético Dallas, a USL Championship expansion side debuting in 2027, as the first player in franchise history. In Mexican marketing columns PUMA's unnamed statement is still cited as the fastest exit a sponsor can take inside a club's crisis.
