What happened
Pizzeria Dennis was founded on 1 May 1975 by Dennis Rafkin on Linnankatu in Turku, Finland. The chain specialized in Italian cuisine and pizza, and later expanded to include a location on Bulevardi in Helsinki and a bakery supplying retail customers. For decades it was a well-known Finnish restaurant brand.
The chain faced severe financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which drove up costs for ingredients and energy. In November 2022, Pizzeria Dennis filed for bankruptcy. The original Linnankatu restaurant in Turku closed on 8 November 2022, followed by the Helsinki location.
In late December 2022, the Rafkin family's company Dennis-yhtiöt Oy repurchased the Pizzeria Dennis trademark from the bankruptcy estate, preserving the brand name but not the chain itself.
Why it happened
- The COVID-19 pandemic severely reduced restaurant traffic and revenue, leaving the chain with insufficient cash reserves.
- The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 drove up food ingredient and energy costs, squeezing margins that were already thin from pandemic losses.

The lesson
A beloved local brand with decades of history can still be sunk by a one-two punch of revenue collapse and cost inflation. No amount of customer goodwill replaces positive cash flow.
