Malik Beasley had a career year for the Detroit Pistons in 2024-25, and the team was negotiating a three-year, $42 million deal to keep him as free agency approached. On June 29, 2025 — one day before free agency opened — ESPN reported that Beasley was the subject of a federal investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York into gambling on NBA games and prop bets, tied to unusual betting patterns on his statistics during the 2023-24 season with Milwaukee.
The Pistons pulled the $42 million offer immediately, with all other interested teams also pausing talks. Beasley went unsigned through the 2025-26 season. His attorneys stressed he had not been charged, and in August 2025 said he was no longer a target of the investigation — by which point the roster spot, and the contract, were gone.
The Pistons had already used their full mid-level exception on another free agent by the time the investigation cleared, capping any offer they could still make at roughly $7.2 million under Beasley's non-Bird rights — a fraction of the original deal.
